[comp.protocols.misc] High Speed Protocols

bajpai@ee.tamu.edu (Dhruv Bajpai) (03/07/91)

Does anybody have any information about organizations involved in
development of 'High Speed Protocols'. I Know about IBM project(PSi)
   and Silicon Graphics(XTP).
	Thanx in advance.

Minor clarification: Although the "XTP Protocol Definition" document is not
copyrighted, and the XTP protocol may be used by anybody for anything...

"Xpress Transfer Protocol, XTP, and Protocol Engine are registered
trademarks of Protocol Engines, Incorporated, and must be so noted
whenever referenced in a document." [From the XTP spec.]

And while it is true that XTP began at SGI, and many other groups outside
either PEI or SGI (e.g., XTP TAB members) have made and continue to make
significant contributions to XTP, PEI is currently the repository for what
is considered "the XTP spec". [I say "currently", because protocols, if
successful, have a habit of eventually becoming "standards"...]

Where can I get the XTP protocol definition document? Is it available for
ftp anywhere, or must I get a paper copy?

Sorry, no, it's not available via FTP, or any other electronic medium.
[At least, not at this time.] But to get a free paper copy, email a request
(including your surface-mail address) to "xtp-request@pei.com", and they'll
send it within a day or two. [Via airmail, if outside the continental U.S.]
