[comp.protocols.misc] umodem

asherman@dragon.cpe.ulowell.edu (Aaron Sherman) (03/29/91)

Ok, this is the mess: I have an AT&T UnixPC with umodem 2.8 (no, that's not
a typo)..

On a DECSystem 5400 I have umodem3.9 source. Prblem is, that
I can't get the two to talk. The source for 3.9 does not compile right off
(does anything), I had to set the value of IN_BUFF_SIZE (which was defined
only for some PURDUE machine). I tried the value for the other machine and
1024 (a reasonable default for just about anything).

The transfers are all for binary files, and always fail at the 16'th packet
(or sector or record depending on which part of the docs you're reading).
That is they fail there if they ever get started. Many times
nothing at all will happen and it will just time out.

One possible problem: I'm comming over three different sets of gateways/
routers/terminal servers, and as such the following characters when
sent by my machine are escapes:

^P, ^\ and break (whatever that is)

are any of these sent from a recieving UMODEM2.8?
Is UMODEM2.8 just hopelessly incompattible with 3.9?
Am I doomed?
Why am I using an AT&T box?
