[comp.protocols.misc] question regarding protocols

spoelhof@kodak.com (06/02/91)

Netfolk,

I am in the process of drafting a document outlining the major "RPC"
technologies. The purpose of the document is to educate our data-processing
staff. I am loosely using the term "RPC" as I am interpreting it to be
a set of procedures which facilitate general purpose distributed computing.

Thus far, the document is considering the following technologies:

1. Sun/ONC
2. OSF/DCE
3. OSI (including MAP/TOP suite)
4. SAA - e.g., LU6.2, CPI-C, etc
5. Digital Application Architecture
6. PC LAN technology - NETBIOS and others
7. Interactive Systems - Netwise

Questions:

1. What other technologies should be considered?
2. What are the key protocols within each technology?
3. What application paradigms does each technology support/limit?
4. What are the relative advantages and disadvantages of each technology?

Your expertise, biased opinions, pointers to good articles, or just plain
two cents are appreciated!

Please reply to spoelhof@kodak.com

I will summarize findings for all who ask.

Thanks in advance!
