Here at Ohio State we are constructing what will end up being a large AppleTalk internet. We currently have 5 Kinetics FastPath gateways on our Ethernet, running the Kinetics DDP gateway code. This is used in conjunction with the K-TALK/Host libraries from Kinetics to allow our Pyramid 98x to communicate with the AppleTalks. The main thing we are using it for right now is running a beta copy of the UNIX TOPS server, but we also like being able to get to the rest of the LaserWriters in the building and the like. This, at least, is the theory. For the last few months we have been having major timeout problems. Connections die, printers disappear, and life is generally miserable. Since we've also been having NFS timeout problems, we figured that we were having Ethernet problems. This may be true, but as it turns out, it seems not to be the cause of the problems we have been having with AppleTalk. One of the gateways had been configured wrong--it had a different network number for the Ethernet than the rest. The net result was that the Ethernet's AppleTalk network number was fluctuating at about 30-45 second intervals. I'm suprised things ran at all. The moral of this story is: check the things that you "know" can't be the problem before looking for esoteric problems. -- ==================== The greatest warriors are the ones Clayton Elwell who fight for peace.
