[comp.protocols.appletalk] Patches 6 & 7 for CAP distribution 4

cck@CUNIXC.COLUMBIA.EDU.UUCP (08/28/87)

Patch file #6 and #7, the second and third respectively for CAP
distribution 4.00 are now available.

The reason two patch files are being issued at once is because
substantial changes were made to the afp code. To minimize the
traffic from people who don't care about it, we've put all those
changes into the second patch file. If you want to quibble, we
probably should have called these patches 6a and 6b.

With these patch files, you must have CAP distribution 4.00 with
patches 5, 6, and 7 to have the most current code. Within several
months, these will all be combined into CAP distribution 5.0. At that
time, if reasonable, any changes made from the CAP 4.0 with patches 5,
6, and 7 will be issued in yet another patch file. With CAP
distribution 5, we will probably remove the "Pre-distribution" notice
and expect distributions after that point to slow down.

Also, we previously requested information on who was using CAP and
received a smaller number of replies than people who obtained copies
from Columbia via anonymous FTP; if you could just take a few minutes
and fill out the survey form included as "WHOIS" in the patch files,
it would help us justify the work we're doing.

You should obtain patch 6 if you use the printing code or are
currently having problems with installation of CAP.

You should obtain patch 7 if you want to use Aufs.

PAT6:
o fixes some outstanding problems with pap code and papif, tlw, etc.
   - while we still haven't managed to get rid of the papif -1101
error (no release received) completely, we've reduced the
     frequency quite a bit.
o bug fixes to atis (to make it live with zones better)
 o better installation procedures
o fixes to various header files
o easier porting to various unix variants
 o many other bug fixes
o Note: the asp code calling conventions still do not conform
to those recently published by Apple.

PAT7:

Essentially a new copy of Aufs. I would send diffs, but the diffs
would be larger than the sources in most cases! However, there are
diffs in this patch for other parts of the afp code. I've marked Aufs
as being out of beta test, but you should still be wary - it's a big
piece of code with many threads.

Aufs currently does not implement the AppleSingle or AppleDouble
formats. This specification is still preliminary and was released
after the point that major changes to Aufs were frozen.

o Major rewrites of many modules.
 o many many bug fixes
 o better unix file handling
o WARNING: THE ENTIRE AUFS DIRECTORY IS REPLACED

These files are available via:
o anonymous FTP from CU20B.COLUMBIA.EDU in the directory
	[US.CCK.CAP.D4] as PAT6.SHAR(~150kb) and PAT7.SHAR(~350kb).
"Compress"ed versions are available in the same directory as
	PAT6.Z (binary, 70KB) and PAT7.Z (binary, 160KB). CU20B is
a TOPS-20 host! Use "tenex" mode on unix machines (binary on
others) if you are transferring binary files or you will end
	up with garbage.
o anonymous FTP from Sumex-Aim.Stanford.Edu in the directory
	PS:<INFO-MAC> as AT-CAP4.PATCH6 and AT-CAP4.PATCH7
(note: patch 5 was previously available as at-cap4.patch from
sumex and bitnet. It is now at-cap4.patch5. In addition, it was
redone so patch was accept it. Finally, the copy of at-cap4.shar
at sumex has had the aufs directory removed).

Note: the files are NOT currently available from macserve at pucc
(bitnet). A followup message will be posted when they are. (Beware:
there are files by the sumex names there, but they are outdated and
are in binary compressed format - you will not be able to use these!
Please wait until the followup message is sent).

There is no mechanism for sending any part of the distribution or
patches via mail, uucp, or tape from Columbia.

Instead of relying on the files showing up at PUCC's MACSERVE, the CAP
distribution is now available via BITNET from CUVMA (Columbia).

The relevant files are currently named:
RELEASE NOTES	- CAP Release notes
MODIFICA TIONS	- CAP Modification list (out of date)
	CAP4 SHAR	- CAP Distribution 4
PAT5 SHAR - First patch set for dist 4
PAT6 SHAR - Second patch set for dist 4
PAT7 SHAR - Third patch set for dist 4

I've also put a copy of the KIP distribution there - get a copy of the
directory for the file names.

You can get a directory of all the available files by typing:
tell listserv at cuvma index cap
Please do this in the future to ascertain the file names since we may
change them (e.g. to setup for afd or new distribution). You can
retrieve a file by typing:
tell listserv at cuvma get <file>
(for example: tell listserve at cuvma get pat6 shar)

Please do not use the listserv AFD feature at the present time.

Thanks to Alan Crosswell here for setting this up for me.
