[comp.protocols.appletalk] PC's on AppleTalk...

cayz@UDEL.EDU (James Cayz) (11/07/87)

All,

I have a problem that I would like some input on from y'all out there
who may have already done this...

I have the following up and running now:

TCP/IP LAN consisting of 3 PC's and a DELNI, under DOS and MIT
software, 3Com boards. 1 PC is a tftp print server now.

AppleTalk Net, with AppleShare software, 4 Macs, and a LaserWriter.

University Mainframes on standard Ethernet running TCP/IP, but no net
		connections into building...

The campus is maybe(?) connecting remote buildings via Proteon boxes,
so I figure that is how I would get the Ethernet from the PC's to the
mainframes. No problem there... Or is there????

Problem is Ethernet to Appletalk (Appleshare (does this make a
difference?))... Yes, I know - "Kinetics box and choice of software".
Logical. But people want to print stuff on the LaserWriter from the PCs... And
I am not that knowledgeable about the current state-of-the-art in Ethernet to
Appletalk gateways, so I have some questions:

Questions... (Fill in XYZZY with soft/hardware of choice)
	0. Does the Kinetics/XYZZY system work with AppleShare?
	1. Does the Kinetics/XYZZY system allow printing from Ethernet to
		AppleTalk?
	2. Is there a straightforward conversion program if Kinetics/XYZZY does
		not do this (Text->PostScript)?

	3. What is the AppleTalk PC board, what does it allow me to do, and are
there better products of same type on the market?
	4. I have a "useless" PC - Can I use this as a gateway if it had both
3Com and AppleTalk PC boards in it (this software available?)?
(This PC is currently the tftp print spooler)

Any other comments / suggestions about my problem and solutions are
welcome, including flames (I can hit "rmm" pretty fast!). And I would rather
have a lot of mail than none at all!!

I know that this may generate a lot of responses, so PLEASE REPLY
DIRECTLY TO ME (either by my .sig, or via the path in the header), and I will
summarize what I got, and the decision (when it is made).

					Thanx Greatly in Advance,
					James
