[comp.protocols.appletalk] papif STSTUS feature reducing reliability?

Absolutely... it seemed to be responsible for 98% of the printer wedges
(papif or lpd going away without warning) that we were experiencing.
I added some trace and alarm code to the code, to little or no
advantage... sometimes the protocol would appear to stop, sometimes
printer errors would occur, and sometimes the whole process would steal
silently away into nowhere, leaving no traces. Once I disabled the
status-watch feature, printer reliability improved by an order of
magnitude at least.
