I'm trying to help someone who has a curious problem. He has a LocalTalk network with Macintoshes and a 3Com 3Server using 3+Mac file server software. He bought a Kinetics FastPath to connect to SUNet, but when he boots up the KFPS (running 9/87 KIP) on the net, the Macs can no longer see the file server in the Chooser (if they're already linked to it they can continue getting file service). The KFPS works fine. He's tried rebooting the server after bringing up the KFPS, to no avail. Everything appears to be normal in the KFPS and 3Server configurations. Packet traces show that the server doesn't respond to an NBP Lookup from the KFPS, but does direct from a Mac. Curious things: 1) This same setup works fine in our Networking Systems office. 2) This person added a LaserWriter II to his net yesterday, and it seems to have the same problem, namely disappearing when the KFPS comes up. His classic LaserWriters have no problem. So: Does anyone else have a KFPS sharing a net with a) a 3Server running 3Plus? b) a LaserWriter II? Does it work? Lemme know. Thanks, - RL "Bob" Morgan Networking Systems

Well, to be honest, I went through the process of setting up a Kinetics fast path box a few months ago. I found the instructions to be confusing, the directions baffling, and also sometimes incorrect. We were also given wrong versions of things, and some of the setup utilities just didn't work. Aside from that, everything was just fine. I can't imagine why anyone would have trouble with this stuff... In all fairness, I should mentions that some of the fine folks in Networking were able to help us out of our predicament pretty quickly. Stu -------

We've had a somewhat similar problem here. Our Fastpath works fine using CAP code for IP routing to do Telnet. There have been no problems with conflicts with our LaserWriters or the Corvus file server (we don't run Omninet). However, when I tried to load it up with Kinetics' etalkgw.srec, suddenly the Corvus users couldn't boot! Now, we know that the boot procedure for these people requires access to the server Mac used for the Corvus, and if it's down, they can't boot. The interesting thing is, if I disconnect the Fastpath while they boot, and then reconnect it, everything runs fine. The Corvus is old and will be replaced soon, so I don't plan to spend a lot of time fixing this. /kenw
