[comp.protocols.appletalk] National Ethernet chip "DP8390"

ragge@nada.kth.se (Ragnar Sundblad) (05/21/88)

Is there anyone who knows anything about the ethernet chip
on the Apple EtherTalk cards, "DP8390"?
Is this a custom chip, or is it a standard one?

It looks like the EPROM is directly connected to the 8390,
so perhaps it (the 8390) can boot by itself.

The DP8390 is National Semiconductor's ethernet controller. It's quite
a normal ethernet controller except that it's pretty easy to program
(modulo some bugs in the chip). It's a standard part that is used in
other ethernet interfaces, most notably the Western Digital WD8003 for
the IBM PC.
