[comp.protocols.appletalk] CAP 5.00 Distribution

cck@CUNIXC.COLUMBIA.EDU (Charlie C. Kim) (05/25/88)

Distribution 5.00 of the Columbia AppleTalk Package for Unix (CAP) is
now available.

CAP is written for BSD 4.2 Unix and derivatives. CAP implements a
library containing a portion of Apple Computer's AppleTalk protocols.
In order to use this package you need an AppleTalk/Ethernet bridge
(e.g. Kinetics FastPath box). CAP includes a number of applications
that can be used to print to a LaserWriter, spool for a LaserWriter,
and act as Unix based AppleShare compatible file server (no support
for AppleShare PC). CAP also includes a number of sample programs and
contributed software.

CAP library routines are structured, for the most part, the same as
the Apple routines described in "Inside AppleTalk" and "Inside
LaserWriter." Refer to the Apple documents and the procedure comments
for a complete description of the routines and how to call them.

The orginal work in this area of Bill Croft, Stanford University SUMEX
project, area provided the inspiration for CAP.

CAP 5.00 does not contain any major new additions from distribution
4.00. CAP 5.00 primarily corrects a large number of problems in CAP
4.00 or adds features to already existing programs. Previous CAP
users are strongly advised to upgrade to CAP 5.00.

Some of the major changes from distribution 4.00 to distribution 5.00 are:
o Aufs, papif, and lwsrv are now far more robust and have had a large
number of new features added such as international character
   support for Aufs.
o libraries have been reorganized to minimize the dependencies upon KIP
o Machine dependent configuration, for a wide number of machines, has been
   made far easier

In general, current distribution information may be obtained by
retrieving the file "INFO" from the host cunixc.columbia.edu
(128.59.32.130) via anonymous ftp from the directory cap or by sending
mail to capinfo@cunixc.columbia.edu (internet) or
columbia!cunixc!capinfo (uucp). The current copy of "INFO" follows
this mesage. Please note the change of primary distribution host.

It is planned to make CAP 5.00 will be available from the
INFO-MACINTOSH archives at SUMEX-AIM at a later point for west coast
people.

Also, at a future point, it is planned to make copies of the CAP 5.00
distribution available on 9 track tape from Columbia's Kermit
Distribution Group with a distribution fee of approximately $100.

In the interim, CAP 5.00 is only available from Columbia University
via anonymous ftp. Expect posting later on other distribution
mechanisms.

CAP 5.00 has been run successfully on a variety of machines/unixes
including Ultrix 2.0, BSD 4.3, SunOS 3.2, AUX 1.0, Pyramid's, Encore
Multimax's, ACIS 4.3 on the IBM RT PC, HP-UX 6.00 and will probably
run on a variety of hosts based on BSD 4.2 or 4.3; however, it has
only been tested extensively on Ultrix 2.0.

Distribution
------------

Distribution is via anonymous FTP from cunixc.columbia.edu
[128.59.32.130]. The directory is cap and the files in that directory
are:

 o INFO - this file
 o README - release notes
o MODIFICATIONS - list of modifications from distribution 4 to 5 (ascii, 4KB)
 o cap.tar.Z - distribution in tar format "compress"ed using
   "compress" (binary, 550kb)
o shar/cap50.1shar - first half of cap dist - shell archive (ascii, 770KB)
shar/cap50.2shar - second half of cap dist - shell archive (ascii, 550KB)

In parenthesis, we specify whether the file is binary or ascii and the
approximate size in kilobytes. WARNING: this distribution is about
double the size of distribution 4. Note: you should specify "binary"
mode when transfering binary files to be safe.

You may also wish to retrieve the following files from
sumex.stanford.edu from the directory ps:<info-mac> as:
o at-kip.shar (source for required Stanford UDP code for KFPS)
o at-gw.srec (compiled Stanford UDP code for KFPS)

The CAP distribution is available via BITNET from CUVMA (Columbia) is
no longer available.

Ummmh... In the copy of INFO posted previously, it said that the
current distribution was available in the file cap.tar.Z. Well,
that's not quite correct (or to be blunt "that's wrong!"), it is
cap50.tar.Z. Sorry for any confusion.

Also, please note that the shar files in the shar subdirectory are
duplicates of the tar file!
