[comp.protocols.appletalk] Need help using KIP 0188 on subnets

tengi@phoenix.Berkeley.EDU (Christopher Tengi) (06/07/88)

Greetings AppleTalkers!

I have recently been given the task of figuring out how to make Kinetics boxes running KIP rev0188 talk between subnets. What we have is a Sun with 2 ethernet interfaces that understands subnets, with a bunch of Kinetics boxes on one ethernet (the current backbone) and one Kinetics box on the other ethernet. We are using an IBM RT (on the backbone side) as the admin host. When I tell the RT to boot the Kinetics boxes, I see some UDP packets cross over the Sun gateway to the lone Kinetice on the subn

et. It then tries to do an "arp who-has" for the admin host (the RT on the other ethernet). As nobody answers the arp request, the box never gets any further. I have tried PINGing the K-box from various machines with the expected results: if the pinger is on the subnet, the K-box responds, if it is on the other side of the gateway, the K-box sends out an "arp who-has" request. I am new to enough of this stuff so that a solution is not readily apparent. I know I could put the K-box on the other side of

the gateway and have it work, but we are splitting our current backbone into a number of subnets in the near future, so that type of a solution will not help for very long. By the way, we are still using BSD 4.2-style broadcast addresses (because of a number of machines that we cannot yet upgrade), and I have set up atalkatab the way I believe the KIP doc specifies (using "H" entries for each K-box, etc).

Any and all suggestions welcome (flames will be extinguished :-)

	Thanks,
	    /Chris
