[comp.protocols.appletalk] Hooking Corvus OmniDrive to a LocalTalk net.

jailbait@c3pe.UUCP (R. "Jailbait" Segal) (07/02/88)

Here's the situation:
A small contract programming/consulting firm with a small and hopefully
growing Mac section (Currently a Plus with 20 meg Rodime, an SE with
internal 20 meg and a 4 meg, 16 grey II with internal Everex 80 meg) that has a potential of 120 megs of crashed hard disks.
Also just sitting around the office are a Corvus OmniDrive and a Corvus THE
BANK tape backup system.
In the past, these could be (allegedly) easily connected to an Appletalk -
uh, sorry, LocalTalk - network by using the OmniTalk software.
Well, near as I can tell after spending a while talking to Corvus Tech
support, OmniTalk is a thing of the past, having been replaced by
CONSTELLATION software and the OmniNet Transporter hardware and now seems to
be totally incompatable with LocalTalk.
Now, I don't even honestly know if this OmniDrive is compatable with the Mac
or if OmniDrive For Macintosh is a different beast.
The beast uses a twisted pair cable, a 3 pin connector and other specifics
are unknown.
Ok. Now. What do you people out ther know about this thing? What do you
people know about The Bank? I realize that LocalTalk is slow, but slow is
better than just sitting around unconnected. So, how do we hook this thing
up without spending $495 per machine for the hardware?
Oh, also, are there problems (as seems likely, seeing as how this all came
out in '85) using OmniTalk with A)HFS, B)128K ROMS, C)256K ROMS, D)68020's,
E)Other new stuff?
Well, any help will be appreciated, please mail responses and ask me in a
couple of weeks if you want to benefit from what I've learned.
By the way, if you want, my number (during office hours) is (301) 890 1600.
Ask for Rich.

Thanks in advance, Slack,
Jailbait.
