[comp.protocols.appletalk] Problems with KIP 0688/CAP v5.0

voh@doc.ic.ac.uk (Vincent O Ho) (07/06/88)

We were running an earlier version of KIP and CAP v4.0 quite happily until
recently. About this time last month we downloaded the latest KIP (I think -
size 82,296 bytes) from sumex.stanford and CAP v5.0 from cunixc.columbia.
I have encountered the following problems while 'testing' the latest
distribution:-

KIP 0688: It works fine with the new atalkad; however, I notice that our
	   KFPS-2 keeps "crashing" frequently since this KIP installation;
(**** at LEAST once EVERY DAY !! ****)
the "FastPath Manager" tells me that the gateway has been reset
when I launch it from my Mac. We already had a hardware upgrade
done on our KFPS-2 back in April, which included a new PROM chip-set,
and moving of an 'offending' capacitor.

CAP v5.0: With KIP 0688 running in the KFPS-2 "getzones" returns the correct
zone information. "atlook" and "atlooklws" return nothing from the
net. "atis" and "aufs" start up okay, but I cannot see the aufs
server from my Mac (I have not tried out the other programs yet).
Interestingly, CAP v4.0 continues to work fine with the latest KIP.
I have tried running both "atlook" and "look" (from CAP v4.0) under
dbx. Everything appears to correspond except for the value of
nbpBufSize and the pointer addresses. And of course "look" returns
a list of Appletalk devices/services, but "atlook" does not.

I know many of you are running the latest KIP/CAP happily. Can anybody throw
some light on these problems ? The Unix host is a Gould Powernode Series 9082
running UTX-32 (4.3BSD with some System V features, I believe). The following
is a copy of our atalk.local:

>	# Network information for THIS Unix-host
>	# Appletalk-net Internet-node-number Appletalk-zone
>	10.81 36 ICDOC
>	# Network information for Kinetics FastPath Gateway
>	# Appletalk-net Internet-node-number Internet-address
>	10.83 1 129.31.83.1

Our atalkatab reads:

>	10.81	N1	129.31.81.0	ICDOC	#Doc Departmental-net
>
>	10.83	N1	129.31.83.0	ICDOC	#CMSG Appletalk
>	20.83	KC	129.31.83.1	ICDOC	#Computer room 221
> I129.31.0.0	I129.31.81.36	#ipbroad ipname(=tGould)
>	# If we use 129.31.81.0 as our ipbroad, our Mac clients won't be
>	# able to see 4.2BSD systems when they go into their CHOOSER !!
> I129.31.81.36	L0 #ipdebug(=tGould) ipfile
> L0 L0 L0 L0	S0 S0 #ipother unused unused
> LX0	S0	S31 #flags ipstatic ipdynamic
> S20.83	S10.83	"ICDOC" #atneta atnete zonea

The last time I posted to this newsgroup, requesting explanation of the various
gateway programs in use, I did not get any reply. I hope I will be more
successful this time. Any comments, advice and help will be much appreciated.
