[comp.protocols.appletalk] TOPS/Sun Installation

(Please reply to jar@jessica.stanford.edu)

We are trying to install TOPS/Sun 2.0 and are running into problems.
Our configuration is a Sun 3/75 runnin SunOS 3.5, a FastPath (yes
with 3.0 PROMS) running 6/88 KIP code and configured for EtherTalk
and AppleTalk encapsulation.. On the other side of that FastPath is a
mac and pc running TOPS on AppleTalk.

We installed as far as the kernel mods and rebooting, but the daemons
all die and the Sun doesn't know any net or bridge number, let
alone a node value (running atinfo yields "my net=0, node=1, bridge=0").
What's the specific communication that goes on between the Sun and the
FastPath to get these values assigned?? I'm using TOPS' version of
etherfind, called topspeek and seeing packets coming from the FastPath,
but they are not AppleTalk packets (according to what topspeek is supposed
to report.) I can't get any reasonable information from the documentation
or TOPS so far and it's very frustrating.

In case it matters, we have a total of 4 FastPaths on our IP subnet. Two
are running 9/87 KIP and two are running 6/88 KIP. They are defined
in the same zone although they boot off of different atalkad servers.
The EtherTalk is definitely working through the FastPath, since we have
Macs directly on the Ethernet working fine.

Thanks to any bit of information I can get on this.....

A last minute flash that came in while I was writing this - TOPS Technical
Support has told me that I can't use KIP because it "does not work"...I
know that some of you have run TOPS with KIP 6/88, so please let me
know how you did it!!
