[comp.protocols.appletalk] Inter*Poll; Socket 4 from outer space?

roy@phri.UUCP (Roy Smith) (09/14/88)

I just got my copy of Inter*Poll. Playing around I noticed that if
I ask for unnamed objects, I get something without a name on socket 4 of
virtually everything on the net. Here's the output (slightly reformatted
to make it more readable).

Net Node	Name Skt Type Zone
14081	14	-- 4	-- PHRI-AT

14337	162	Laser 12	218	LaserWriter	PHRI-AT
14337	166	Laser 10	186	LaserWriter	PHRI-AT

14337	220	128.122.136.150	72	IPGATEWAY	PHRI-AT

Laser{9,11} are invocations of lwsrv running on the same machine.
The last two entries are a kbox running KIP. The question is, what are
these mystery socket 4 things?

BTW, if you have an AppleTalk network and don't have Inter*Poll,
you should get yourself a copy. It's a really nice way to see what's going
on around your net. The only stupid thing about it is the name.

According to Inside AppleTalk, socket 4 is the Echo Socket...

The assigned sockets are as follows:

Taken from Inside AppleTalk, pg. B-2

$01	RTMP socket
$02	Names Information Socket
$04	Echoer Socket
$06	Zone Information Socket

Socket 4 is used to support the Echo Protocol. It simply listens for
packets and echoes them back to their sender. This can be used to
determine if a particular node is alive, and also to find out how
long it takes to reach that node. Echo Protocol is mentioned briefly
in Inside Mac V-522 and described in more detail in Inside AppleTalk.

Ask your Apple dealer to order it for you -- it's an official Apple
product (as opposed to a being Claris pseudo-Apple product).

Angelo,

Inter*Poll is a regular (whatever that is...) software package available in
dealers and thru standard ordering channels.

I'm the author, yet I don't know the P/N, but the price is $129.00.
