I just got my hands on a copy of the System 6.0.2 software update, and brought my Mac SE up to date. Having done so, I find that Apple's new version of the AppleShare client software (version 2.0.1, according to the Get Info box) has fixed a bug that was causing me much grief when dealing with CAP's "aufs" AFP-compatible file server. In the previous version of the client, it was difficult or impossible to use the "automount volumes at boot time" feature in a useful way. There was a bug in the version 1.2 client, which insisted on sending passwords to the server in encrypted form, even if the server had indicated (during the FPGetSrvrInfo exchange) that it understands only cleartext passwords. As a result of this bug, it was impossible to auto-mount an Aufs volume at boot time as a registered user with a password; only "guest" mounts would work. With AppleShare 2.0.1, the boot-time password is sent in cleartext, and Aufs has no trouble authenticating it. Kudos to Apple for fixing this one! -- Dave Platt VOICE: (415) 493-8805 USNAIL: Coherent Thought Inc. 3350 West Bayshore #205 Palo Alto CA 94303 UUCP: ...!{ames,sun,uunet}!coherent!dplatt DOMAIN: dplatt@coherent.com INTERNET: coherent!dplatt@ames.arpa, ...@sun.com, ...@uunet.uu.net
