Members of several statistics departments have been discussing the creation of a newsgroup for statistics for some time. There are several people on the net interested in statistics because of the close relationship between it and computing. Theoretical statistics is also interesting on its own merit. The group (net.stat) would be used mainly for discussion of statistical software. Many discussions would probably center around S, the interactive statistics system developed by Becker and Chambers at Bell Labs. Another segment of the group would be similar to net.math in that discussions of theoretical aspects of statistics would take place. We have monitored net.math and have decided that it is not an appropriate forum for us. I expect there are also several USENET sites that have many users who would be interested in discussions of statistical software even though they are not statisticians per se. A STRONG second for a net.stat newsgroup. I have spent countless hours helping usenet readers install and understand statistical packages (esp. S), and would welcome and open forum. I was about to propose net.stat myself, but end-of-semester-blues intervened. -- Mike Meyer -- Phone (608) 263-7310 ARPA: mikem%wisc-stat.uwisc@uwisc.ARPA UUCP: {...seismo,allegra}!uwvax!mikem

I believe that net.usoft is designated for the discussion of the S package. Perhaps we could use that.... -- Brian A. Ehrmantraut {ihnp4, decvax, ucbvax}!allegra!fisher!bae

Here is one vote for the new group. I am personally very interested in fact/flames/gossip about S, and how users would compare it with SAS (r), BMDP (r), and (yech) even SPSS (r). I have just gottne the Becker and Chambers book, and am looking through it now. By the way, what about net.usoft.s? Supposedly it is about S, but I have never gotten a single thing on it. Is it dead/net? p

I think that perhaps net.usoft could be used for this; since its description is "universal software packages". Such topics as Vaxima, Troll and so on might appropriately be discussed there as well. -- Rsk the Wombat UUCP: { allegra, decvax, ihnp4, harpo, teklabs, ucbvax } !pur-ee!rsk { cornell, eagle, hplabs, ittvax, lanl-a, ncrday } !purdue!rsk

Let's hear it for net.stat! Even if only statisticians subscribe, there seem to be enough of them scattered through the net to justify this. Perhaps such a newsgroup might also provide a forum to discuss statistical software in general. Even though the group "net.usoft.s" was intended for the S language, there hasn't been much traffic there lately, and the name itself doesn't advertise the function well anymore. Make it net.math.stat - many mathematicians wouldn't bother reading net.news.group. -- The Ice Floe of Larry Bickford {decvax,ihnp4,allegra,ucbvax}!{decwrl,sun}!qubix!lab decwrl!qubix!lab@Berkeley.ARPA

I submit thast since statictics is a branch of mathematics, and we are trying to cut down on the number of newsgroups (particularly top-level groups), statistics discussions should take place in net.math . If it is later determined that statistics is generating enough articles to warrant its own group, you could then create net.math.stat . Please do *not* create another top-level group when there is already an appropriate group for your topic!!! I would like a net.stat as well - we are using Minitab, want more news on SPSS, SAS, and have given up on S as being too hard to learn/use. -- Rex

There used to be a net.usoft.s, which was killed for lack of interest. I suggest making net.math.stat. Erik E. Fair ucbvax!fair fair@ucb-arpa.ARPA dual!fair@Berkeley.ARPA {ihnp4,ucbvax,cbosgd,decwrl,amd70,fortune,zehntel}!dual!fair Dual Systems Corporation, Berkeley, California

Greg had a good idea. Use net.math until a real need for net.stat is shown. Then create net.math.stat is we need it.
