One recent message implied that Xerox Viewpoint is the 1981 Star product simply renamed. Not true. As delivered, Viewpoint provides generally the same functionality, but it is noticeably faster, a good deal of the interface has been changed (e.g. overlapping windows in arbitrary positions are allowed now), and quite importantly, it has been unbundled. Star was a monolithic program, but Viewpoint is a bunch of modules. Using the XDE system, one can write one's own modules and load them into Viewpoint. This is clearly important to allow 3rd-party developers to add to Viewpoint.
