[comp.protocols.appletalk] LocalTalk on shielded wiring

ugogan@ecsvax.uncecs.edu (Jim Gogan) (11/16/88)

I would like to pose the following question re: use of shielded,
twisted-pair cabling for use with LocalTalk (esp. PhoneNet
implementation). Would particularly appreciate any feedback from
Farallon and/or Apple engineers.

We have a number of departments that would like to install a
LocalTalk network (no. of Macs in each location vary) as other
depts. have already done. In the past, our Telecommunications
division on campus has pulled the usual unshielded, twisted-pair per
our request for use with PhoneNet (all implementations to date have
been successful with passive star configurations - only one dept.
has had to use an active star controller). However, the campus
Teleco. folks now want to pull ONE AND ONLY ONE type of wiring
within a building; i.e., shielded, twisted-pair (#22 AWG) wiring,
equivalent to IBM Type 1 cabling.

Is there any knowledge or experience of what this is going to do to
the LocalTalk specifications, again particularly the Farallon
PhoneNet implementation. To what extent is that going to effect
nos. of machines and distance limitations? Please reply via e-mail
with any info as soon as possible! Will post appropriate findings.
Thanks.
