[comp.protocols.appletalk] AppleTalk - Ethernet software

farrell@EREBUS.STANFORD.EDU (Phil Farrell) (12/21/88)

This is in reply to Bill Ross of Washington University, who requested
information about software to use for connections between his Macintoshes,
UNIX machines, and LaserWriters.

There are two basic telnet/ftp packages for the Mac that I know of:
NCSA telnet, available free via anonymous ftp to ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu
(128.174.20.50); and the Stanford Mac/IP program, available to Universities
for a nominal site license fee ($50 - $100, I think) -- send mail to
networking@jessica.stanford.edu for information. Stanford's version has
a better ftp implementation and includes a Mail Handler implementation;
NCSA's offers tektronix graphics emulation (and is free).

Everything else you ask about can be done with the Columbia AppleTalk Package
(CAP) for Berkeley UNIX machines. This includes a printer spooling filter
to let the UNIX system print to LaserWriters on the AppleTalk net; a
"psuedo-laserwriter" process that lets Macintoshes print to LaserWriters
attached to the UNIX system by serial lines; and the AppleShare UNIX File
Server (AUFS) that lets Macintoshes mount UNIX directories as if they
were local disks (the Macs need the AppleShare client code, now a standard
part of version 6.0 of the Mac system software). CAP is free and available
for anonymous ftp from cunixc.columbia.edu (128.59.32.130).
