[comp.protocols.appletalk] EtherTalk with KIP/CAP

kahn@wucs1.wustl.edu (Michael Kahn) (01/03/89)

I'd like to post the first "dumb" questions of the New Year -- Can I
use EtherTalk with Aufs (CAP50) and KIP0688? Is it possible to
combine EtherTalk and LocalTalk on the same net? Here are the specifics:

We currently have KIP0688 and Aufs (CAP50) running on a Sun-4 using a
Kinetics-3 box that connects to 3 MACII's and 3 SE's. Everything on
the MAC side is running LocalTalk. We recently inherited 3 EtherTalk
boards for our MACII's. I'd like to use the EtherTalk boards on the
MACIIs and leave the SE's on LocalTalk but am unwilling to do this if I
loose Aufs services on the IIs. I know that KIP0688 supports EtherTalk
and I know about the need to change atalkatab. But what about the CAP
software?

If it is possible to do this, then I have a related subquestion.
Right now, our 6 machines are on the same net: 128.252.116.xxx. If I
convert the MACII's to EtherTalk and leave the SEs on LocalTalk, do I
need to assign the MACII's to a different net? Is it possible to have
128.252.116.2 thru .4 be my MACII's running EtherTalk and
128.252.116.5 thru .7 by my SE's running LocalTalk
(nah, I doubt it...)

Thanks for the help and sorry if I raised any blood pressures by
asking stupid questions.
