How about PC-NFS from Sun? We use it in one of our PC classroom here at Stanford. Basically we boot each machine with a floppy disk, mount a filesystem from a Sun-2 (yes they're still good for something) and we then run diskless (DOS, etc. comes off the server). As I recall, we pay about $150 a copy for PC-NFS. Each machine requires its own copy. I don't know about source. Standard Unix file protections are enforced. PC-NFS can mount directories from any Unix machine that runs NFS. Contact Sun at 1-800-USA-4SUN for more info.
