DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Department Head is responsible for the administration of
    the  Computer  Science Department. This  will  include  such
    duties  as:  providing  long range  planning  for  a rapidly
    expanding department; developing and maintaining contact and
    cooperation  with   governmental   agencies  and  industries
    related  to computer science in areas such  as  internships,
    financial  aid  and   faculty exchanges;  teaching  computer
    science   courses   including   upper   division    courses;
    supervising  advisors  of  computer  science  students;  and
    providing  leadership  to  a  department  which  serves  the
    computer science  instructional  needs of all departments at
    SDSU.

ACCOUNTABILITY

    The Head  of  the  Computer Science  Department  is directly
    responsible to the Dean of Engineering.

FACILITIES

    The Computer Center  operates an IBM 370/148 with the OS/VS1
    operating system. Student access to the computer is  through
    IBM 3270 terminals. The  students utilize IBM's VSPC and IIS
    teleprocessing  systems.  A   wide  variety  of  application
    packages are available.  The department also has access to a
    variety  of  microcomputers. An equipment upgrade  is  being
    considered for the summer of 1982.

LOCATION

    South Dakota  State  University  is a land grant institution
    consisting of seven colleges, a division of education, and a
    graduate school. It has an enrollment of approximately 7,200
    students. The University is located in a congenial community
    of about 15,000 persons  in east-central South Dakota and is
    57  miles north of the largest city in South  Dakota  (Sioux
    Falls)  on  Interstate  Highway  29.  The  community is also
    approximately  four hours (by auto) west of the Twin  Cities
    of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

APPOINTMENT DATE

    The position will be filled as soon as practicable after the
    application deadline.

COMPENSATION AND APPOINTMENT PERIOD

    Salary  and   academic   rank  will   be  commensurate  with
    education,  training  and  experience.  The  position  is  a
    continuing 12 month appointment.

QUALIFICATIONS

    An earned Doctorate in  Computer  Science or a related field
    is  desired. A Masters in Computer Science or a  field  with
    emphasis on computer  science and considerable experience in
    computer science is the minimum requirement.

    A strong commitment to computer science education, excellent
    verbal  and written communication skill, leadership  ability
    and   interpersonal   skills  appropriate  for  an  academic
    environment are required.

    Knowledge of  several  computer  languages and an ability to
    teach  upper division computer science courses  in  advanced
    areas such as Compiler Construction is desirable.

    Demonstrated  administrative  and/or  management  ability is
    preferred.
