ABSTRACT
--------

CAP is written for BSD 4.2 Unix and derivatives.  CAP implements a
library containing a portion of Apple Computer's AppleTalk protocols.
In order to use this package you need an AppleTalk/Ethernet bridge
(e.g. Kinetics FastPath box).  CAP includes a number of applications
that can be used to print to a LaserWriter, spool for a LaserWriter,
and act as Unix based AppleShare compatible file server (no support
for AppleShare PC).  CAP also includes a number of sample programs and
contributed software.

CAP library routines are structured, for the most part, the same as
the Apple routines described in "Inside AppleTalk" and "Inside
LaserWriter."  Refer to the Apple documents and the procedure comments
for a complete description of the routines and how to call them.

Bill Croft's original work in this area provided the inspiration for
CAP.


Validity
--------

If you do not find a viable method of distribution listed herein, then
you may wish to ensure that you have the most recent copy of this
file.  This can be done by by retrieving it from cunixc.columbia.edu
as noted below or by sending mail to capinfo@cunixc.columbia.edu
(internet) or columbia!cunixc!capinfo (uucp).  Mail to
capinfo@cunixc.BITNET should also work (cunixc is a urep bitnet host).

In addition, major new distribution channels will be posted to the
info-appletalk which is gatewayed to the usenet newsgroup
comp.protocols.appletalk.


Distribution 
------------

The distribution may be retrieved via anonymous ftp to
cunixc.cc.columbia.edu or sumex-2060.stanford.edu.  In addition, you
may retrieve the files via uucp from uunet.

* Distribution is via anonymous FTP from cunixc.cc.columbia.edu
[128.59.32.130].  The directory is cap and the files in that directory
are:

 o INFO - this file
 o README - release notes
 o MODIFICATIONS - list of modifications from distribution 4 to 5 (ascii, 4KB)
 o cap50.tar.Z - distribution in tar format "compress"ed using
   "compress" (binary, 550kb) 
 o shar/cap50.1shar - first half of cap dist - shell archive (ascii, 770KB)
   shar/cap50.2shar - second half of cap dist - shell archive (ascii, 550KB)
 o cpr.* - CAP problem reports

Please note that the shar files are duplicates of cap.tar.Z.  You
should only retrieve the shar files if you have very good reason since
they are more than twice the size.

In parenthesis, we specify whether the file is binary or ascii and the
approximate size in kilobytes.  WARNING: this distribution is about
double the size of distribution 4.  Note: you should specify "binary"
mode when transfering binary files.

In addition, you may also wish to retrieve the KIP (Kinetics IP) files
from cunixc.cc.columbia.edu.  They are in the directory kip.  CAP
currently requires that you run the KIP code in your Kinetics box.

* Alternatively, you can get the files from the info mac archives at
sumex-2060.stanford.edu from the directory ps:<info-mac> as:
 o at-cap5.modifications (MODIFICATIONS above)
 o at-cap5.readme (README above)
 o at-cap5.tarz (cap50.tar.Z above)
In addition, you may wish to retrieve the following files from Sumex.
 o at-kip.shar (source for required Stanford UDP code for KFPS:
	includes UNIX daemons and documentation required to use
	at-gw.srec!)
 o at-gw.srec (compiled Stanford UDP code for KFPS)

"Note that most files on <info-mac> are plain text and FTP easily.
HOWEVER due to the size of cap5 (1.4 megabytes) we [SUMEX] are only
posting the compressed tar file (at-cap5.tarz).  YOU MUST type the
command 'tenex' to your UNIX client FTP program before transfering the
'tarz' file.  This is because sumex-2060 is a TOPS20 (tenex) site and
stores 8-bit binary files in a peculiar fashion."

Note: files in the directory PS:<INFO-MAC> at SUMEX are generally
reflected at the Princeton University Computer Center's MACSERVE
bitnet server (for more info, type "tell macserve at pucc help" on a
bitnet host).  However, this server is generally only useful for ascii
files.  at-cap5.tarz, when last checked, was on macserve; however, to
make use of it, one must be quite careful!  [I xferred it to a IBM
machine under CMS and then used a binary ftp to take it to a unix
machine -- I was then able to uncompress and untar the file; however,
other people have reported major problems.  Please use this as a last
resort since at-cap5.tarz is large enough to cause (loud) complaints
from sites between your site and pucc].

* uunet is a "publicly" accessible uucp node that has a large collection
of software often only available via anonymous ftp over the internet.
For information on how to hook up to uunet if you are not already
connected, please send mail to uunet-request@uunet.uu.net (aka <almost
any major uucp site>!uunet!uunet-request) or call +1-703-764-9789.  On
uunet, the same files as are on cunixc.cc.columbia.edu are available
with the exception of the shar files.  The files are in the directory
pub/cap.

The CAP distribution is no longer available via BITNET from CUVMA
(Columbia).
