[comp.protocols.appletalk] Mailing list for Cayman GatorBox users

jeff@tc.fluke.COM (Jeff Stearns) (01/26/89)

This is to announce the formation of a mailing list for people interested
in the Cayman GatorBox. You're invited to join.

For those who don't know, a GatorBox is a gateway between AppleShare and NFS.
It works with Macintoshes on both LocalTalk and EtherTalk, allowing them to
use files served by NFS servers.

It also emulates a Kinetics FastPath, so it works with KIP, CAP, and MAC-IP.
It costs about $3,000. There are no per-node licensing charges.

It's a fun little box.

I offer this mailing list as a place to discuss performance, features,
misfeatures, bugs, configuration, troubleshooting, competing products, and
anything else of interest to GatorBox users. I'm not affiliated with Cayman
(nor am I a competitor), so there's no possibility of any conflict of interest.

No offense to Jeff Stearns, but...

It seems to me that in the interests of keeping the AppleTalk community all
headed in the same direction, we should keep the discussion right here on
info-appletalk. We (the users of this and other hardware) have a vested
inerest in keeping companies like Cayman, Kinetics, and Apple moving in the
same direction and building software to support our needs (which they have
been doing very well lately!). Don't forget, all this AppleTalk/IP stuff
started without industry support!

I haven't seen complaints that there is too much traffic about the Gatorbox
on info-appletalk, so why split off ?

Now that I think about it, I have to agree with Rob Chandhok.
Unless you are planning to flood the list with comments about the
GatorBox, there is no more appropriate place to talk about it than an
AppleTalk mailing list.

I agree with Rob Chandhok who pleads to keep GatorBox messages on info-apple
talk. I asked to be included in the new mailing list because I don't want to
miss out on GatorBox info, but there has been so little on the Gatorbox going
over info-appletalk that there isn't really a problem.
