We have a Gator connecting several Macs over LocalTalk to a local Pyramid and several other hosts. Now that it's working, there's still the problem of using Mac OS protocols to handle gigantic foreign file systems: i.e., under Un*x, it costs nothing to "cd" to a directory of 1500 files; but under AppleShare... We experimented with DiskTop, which seems to be a little faster than the Finder. Are there other strategies for bypassing some of the time- consuming aspects of AppleShare, perhaps like building the entire desktop for a 300-meg volume one time, and then persuading AppleShare to treat it as a locked volume, to prevent desktop updating? We will be moving to EtherTalk soon, but I'm afraid we'll run into many of the same response time problems with these large file systems. --Cy-- UUCP: ...scgvaxd!ashtate!cy
