Well, friends, our brand spanking-new GatorBox connected to several Macs
and a large network of Sun/3's worked like a charm - for about three days.
Then suddenly, it stopped working reliably, but with a really distinctive
symptom - so distinctive that I'm sure someone out there must have seen it
before. If you have, PLEASE drop me a line and tell me what the problem is.
Here's the poop:
Hardware:
LARGE multi-Ethernet full of Suns running Sun/OS 3.5,
GatorBox running GB software 1.14,
About 300 metres of PhoneNet strung over two floors
with five Macs on it, in a central backbone topology.
Symptoms:
After a few days of running, all of a sudden nothing longer
than a single packet will pass through the GatorBox. AppleShare/NFS
file transfers work if and only if the file is smaller than about
250 bytes, and NCSA TelNet ftp transfers work iff the file is
smaller than about 400 bytes. The Macs say "Disk Error" when larger
files are sent, in either direction.
Thats it. What in the world does it mean? To our knowledge, we have
changed nothing since it all worked last week, except perhaps to lengthen
the PhoneNet a bit. Could that be the problem? Is it too long?
Advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

(PS Has anyone seen the legendary GB 2.0 software that's supposed
to have proper printer spooling and such?)
