[comp.protocols.appletalk] CAP 5.0 / K-STAR - another plea for help

jpa@newcastle.ac.uk (John Aspden) (04/24/89)

I've been having lots of trouble with CAP 5.0. I first tried to install it on
a SUN 3/60. Initially I had the same type of problems that were reported in
this group by a number of different people, namely that aufs couldn't register
its name with atis. One day it just started to work - I had tried so many
different things that I wasn't sure which was the cause of my success, but I
though it was because atis was finally getting the nbp and echo sockets that
it wanted (770 and 772). When it worked, I used aufs successfully for a short
time. I then installed it on a Gould NP1 with no problems. Not quite true - I
had to mess around with the makefiles a bit because the auto-configure didn't
do a good enough job but once the stuff had compiled it just went in and ran -
I'm using aufs and lwsrv very successfully.

Shortly after that, I had to reboot the Sun, and since then I've been unable
to get CAP to run again. I can start up atis, but atistest (or anything else)
fails to register a name. I currently have the old socket numbers in
/etc/services on the Sun but not on the Gould. I'm now having the same
symptoms on an Encore MultiMax too. There have been a few queries on this
subject on the newsgroup comp.protocols.appletalk, but the main gist of the
answers seems to be to make sure that atis can open the nbp and echo sockets.
I think that these sockets are being opened by atis - I have entries in
/etc/hosts for at-nbp at 770 and at-echo at 772 and 'netstat -a' shows them to
be absent before atis is started, and present when atis is running.

I'm running K-STAR in the FastPath4. atalk.local is the same on each of these
machines with the exception of the second item in the first line (mynode)
which is set to the last byte of the internet address of the respective host.
I don't have anything in /etc/services on the Gould (which is working)
relating to the CAP sockets. I'm not using atalkad.

Any advice or ideas welcome........
