[comp.protocols.appletalk] cap & kip

zaka@borogove.shs.ohio-state.edu (Zaka Bhatti) (05/26/89)

We here at Speech & Hearing Dept. purchased a Gator box as a gateway
between our Sun4's and Mac's. I've a lot of talk about cap & kip here
and would like to know if this software can run on a gator box as well.

We are trying to print from the Sun side to the LaserWriter on the
  appletalk side.I'd appreciate your comments.

  Thanks.

Sorry about posting this, but our mailer bounced my reply.

The short answer is "yes". KIP is the package that runs in the Kinetics box
itself so it is not needed, although the KIP documentation provides some
interesting and necessary information for configuring the GatorBox to emulate
the Kinetics box. Once the configuration is complete, however, CAP works just
fine.

Since the GatorBox was supposed to provide file service for the Macs via the
AFP to NFS translation but did not provide any printer gateway functions, we
were interested in CAP primarily for the printer gateway functions you are
asking about. These were handily addressed by the CAP programs "papif"
and "lwsrv". Papif is the lp filter that drives our LocalTalk
connected LaserWriter from our Unix box. Lwsrv is a spooling program that
runs on our Unix box and makes it look like a LaserWriter to our Mac users.
The spooling program accepts LaserWriter jobs and submits them to the
real LaserWriter via the lp spooling system. This may seem a bit roundabout,
but it gives Mac users the advantage of not having to wait for the LaserWriter
if it is busy and gives us a way of accounting for the LaserWriter usage since
all of the jobs go through the Unix box.

Added Bonus: Aufs works too. The GatorBox AFP-NFS translation software
exhibits a severe memory leak (loses buffers, eventually running out of memory
and crashing) when used with our Pyramid 9825. To my knowledge this problem
still exists so we are using the AUFS portion of CAP to provide file service
for our Macs. To their credit, Cayman has attempted to fix this problem
and has improved matters somewhat, but has failed so far in fixing the problem
completely. The last comment I got from technical support was that the problem
would most likely be fixed in their next major maintenance release. I have
not yet received it so I don't know whether or not the problem persists.
