[comp.protocols.appletalk] CAP on Silicon Graphics 4D/50

tim@merlin.bhpmrl.oz (Tim Monks) (06/11/89)

I wonder if anyone can offer some help on what seems to be a perennial
problem in the Mac/Unix world. I am trying to build CAP 5.0 so that I
can do print spooling from a Silicon Graphics 4D/50 (running what is
essentially sysV but with a lot of bsd4.3 libraries & include files) to
a LaserWriter IINTX. I'm not too interested in aufs & file servers.

THE PROBLEM

Having made the libraries and most of the programs I tried to find the
FastPath4 with 'atlook' but this gives :
    % atlook
    abInit: [ddp:   3.00, 166] starting
    Looking for =:=@* ...
and then stops without reporting an IPADRESS.

THE CONFIGURATION

    -	Class B ethernet with 0xfffff00 subnetting

    -	Various Apollos, VAXen, Silicon Graphics & Ethercard Macs hanging
	off this network (+ some other junk) together with a Kinetics
	FastPath 4 with rev 4.1 PROMS.

    -	A FastPath4 running KSTAR rev 4.1 with the following configuration:
	LocalTalk Side:
		Zone Name	IPADA group
		Net Number 	2
		Node Number	220
	Ethernet Side:
		Zone Name	BHP-ETH
		Net number	1
		Node Number	166
	IP Info:
		IP Address of KFP	134.18.1.243
		IP Subnet mask		255.255.255.0
		Broadcast Address	0.0.0.0
		IP address of router	0.0.0.0
		IP Address of admin	0.0.0.0
	UDP Side:
		Zone Name	BHP-ETH
		Net number	3
		Node Number	243
	No servers, routers, administrators
	No option flags set nor option parameters.

    -	atalk.local has the following :
		# host network, node, zone (Ethernet side I guess ?)
		3.0 166 BHP-ETH
		# bridge network, node & IP address (UDP side I guess ?)
		3.0 243 134.18.1.243

    -	cap.printers has the following :
		morfyn=IPADA Laserwriter:LaserWriter@*
		PostScript=IPADA Laserwriter:LaserWriter@*
		ps=IPADA Laserwriter:LaserWriter@*

    -	/etc/services has the following UDP ports declared :
		rtmp	769/udp
		nbp	770/udp
		echo	772/udp
		zip	774/udp

WHAT WE DON'T HAVE

We have not got the AppleTalk Adminstration Daemon atalkad running on
the SG (because we haven't got a copy of this :-(, but I believe that
this daemon is only required for KIP and not KSTAR (is this true)

QUESTIONS I'D LIKE ANSWERED

1. Has anyone got CAP running on (i) Silicon Graphics machines ?
				  (ii) SysV machines ?

2. Is there anything obviously wrong in the above configuration
    or have I stuffed up somewhere in the hacks required to do
    the port of CAP to the SG ?

3. Any suggestions on what to do now ?

Many thanks,
