[comp.protocols.appletalk] NCSA Telnet - KFP4

C4898@UMSLVMA.BITNET (Larry Pickett) (06/10/89)

We have a simple setup here with 13 macs 2 lw's on a phonenet/localtalk
leg with a Kenetics Fastpath 4 into Ethernet. We are running Pacerlink
for file server functions and that runs ok (when the 8600 is up-another
story). Pacer on the mac seems to do TCP ok but NCSA Telnet 2.2 isn't
able to connect to the VAX running Wollogong's software. I'm using
the IP subnetting the appletalk side is 10.0.1.* and the ETHERNET
side is 10.0.0.* (eg. i'm 10.0.1.2 and the VAX is 10.0.0.1). the KFP
is respectively 10.0.1.128 and 10.0.0.16. Inall places the subnet
mask is ff00ff00. Any thoughts??

We are running approx 200 mac's on PhoneNet connected to our campus net
via KFP4's. We had many problems with the subnetmasking. We have a
couple of subnetted B class nets with approx 15 MVax 3600's under Utrix
and VMS.

WRT Subnetting under NCSA 2.2, we found that it had no understanding of
it. If we set the mask to its correct value, we couldn't connect to
anything. If we used no masks then there is not a problem at all.

Another problem with ver 2.2 is its understanding of discrete nets. We
have found that 2.2 can not connect to another B class net, only the one
that its KFP is connected to. We have overcome this problem by
reverting to NCSA 2.1.

As we are also running the Wollongong software software on our vax's and
our configurations appear to be similar, please contact me directly at
the address below if you continue having problems. I will be only too
glad to help if I can.
