I have some questions that I hope somebody on this newsgroup can
answer for me. Forgive my ignorance, I am new to this newsgroup
and am not very knowledgeable about Macintoshes.
(1) I just recently purchased a book called "Inside Appletalk".
I hear that there is a new version of Appletalk which I think
I've seen associated with the acronym ATP2 or something like
that. Where can I get more information? Is there a publication
that is available to the public like the "Inside Appletalk" that
describes these new features? I am particularly interested in
a description of the protocol differences (or a definition of
the new protocol, from which I can deduce the differences).
(2) Does anybody use the Appletalk Filing Protocol on top of TCP/UDP/IP
rather than on top of the other Appletalk protocols? If so, is
there a standard for how it is done (e.g., dedicated TCP or UDP
port numbers, etc.)? If so, is it documented anywhere?
(3) I have seen in this newsgroup some talk of some things called
CAP and KIP. What are they? Are they related? Do they have
anything to do with implementing Appletalk protocols in Unix
environments? (Or other environments for that matter?) I saw
a recent posting that gives the name of a place on the Internet
from which patches for CAP can be grabbed by anonymous FTP.
This suggests to me that what this may be is a public domain or
otherwise freely distributable software package. Is this true?
If so, does anyone have a pointer to a place from which I might
grab it via anonymous FTP?
(4) I have heard some talk here and elsewhere of something called
a Gatorbox. I have a vague impression that this is a protocol
converter for hooking up NFS/UDP/IP networks and AFP/Appletalk
networks and allowing more-or-less transparent file sharing
from one side or the other or both. Is this true? If not,
does anyone care to correct me? It sounds like this Gatorbox
is a commercial product. If so, who makes it and how much
does it cost?
Hey, I don't ask much. Just the answer to life, the universe and
everything. (and don't anybody bother telling me "42")
Thanks in advance for any information on this.
