[comp.protocols.appletalk] How to make a Unix machine display on a MacII

johan@dutnak2.UUCP (07/13/89)

We want to make our MACII's operate like general purpose color
display stations. Let me explain what I mean with that:

A person sits behind a terminal (connected to our Convex Unix
machine). He issues a display command. The Convex
calculates the pixelmap (and lookup table). A few seconds
later, the image pops up on the screen of the MacII (with
Ethernet card) that is located next to his terminal.

So I guess we want to have a Macintosh application that makes
the Mac a slave of the Unix machine. This application should
listen to Ethernet or the serial port. If there is something to
display, it should issue a file transport (of the image file)
and the image should be displayed in a window on the Mac. Save
as PICT would be a nice option.

This is going to be a 5 month project for a computer science
student. We would like to have an idea how it can be done, so
that this guy doesn't have to start from scratch. Perhaps
someone is already doing this?
