[comp.protocols.appletalk] CAP help wanted!

robin@csun.edu (Robin Goldstone ) (07/14/89)

I am hoping someone can give me a little help in bringing up CAP. I apologize
if I am re-hashing old stuff - I have not been following this news group.

I am a non-unix person tring to get CAP running on an HP9000 running HPUX 6.5.
I have successfully compiled everything and installed it all into test
directories. I am using CAP5.0 which I got from Columbia and KIP 0688.
I have a Fast Path 4 with the latest software (K-STAR 7.0 gateway program).
I *did not* load the KIP gw.srec program into the Kinetics box because Kinetics
told me to use K-STAR 7.0 which is more current and will work with CAP. Is this
correct information? I set the option flag in Fast Path Manager to support
the new UDP addresses. The Kinetics box has been working fine. I can telnet
and ftp to anything on our local net and beyond. I can also successfuly
ping the Kinetics box from the unix box that I have CAP on.

On the unix box, as I said, everything compiled fine. I set up an atalk.local
file and edited /etc/services to include the new UDP numbers. According to
the CAP documentation, those are the only KIP related things I should have
to do to run CAP. I then ran atlook which is supposed to be the first thing
to try. The program runs but does not find any appletalk devices out there.
I talked to someone at Columbia who told me that I have to also have atalkatab
set up and atis running before anything will work. Is this correct? If so,
what I am looking for is someone who is willing to help me set up the atalkatab
file and also verify that I have set up the atalk.local file correctly. I
have read the documentation over and over, but I am still confused about the
different addressing schemes used and the relationship of the addresses used
in Fast Path Manager versus those used by the atalkatab and atalk.local files.

Sorry this is so long. If someone can help me, please reply by e-mail or
follow up here if appropriate. Thanks!
