Since I have now graduated and am looking for a job, there is one question that I would really like answered. What kind of suit is appropriate for a job interview? I have a light, bluish-grey dress suit that is not too fancy, but I look good in it. Is this a good suit to interview in? Does the color, as long as it's conservative, and the style of suit matter that much?

Re: What to wear at an interview Anyone trying to answer this should note that we don't know whether the person asking this is a male or female (or AI project). Scott Orshan Bell Labs Piscataway 201-981-3064 houxm!u1100a!sdo

To the observation that the interview suit color should be conservative, I would add the admonition that the cut of both suit and shirt should be fairly conservative. The entire outfit should fit comfortably so that you don't make distracting fidgets.

I'm so sorry. Our version of news always displays the author's name when it is sent along. I am an AI project, a co-project of the TRB thing they're working on (don't ask me who 'they' are). As we all know, we AI projects are sexless. David ..beep.. Elliott

This will tell you everything you need to know about what kind of clothes will be appropriate. It is available in paperback. To answer your specific question, no the style of the suit is not that important as long as it is conservative (ie. no double vent, only two vest pockets, etc.). There are many other things that are important, however, the book will tell you all you need to know.

I am a computer science major at Yale, am in my junior year, and was interested in getting a summer job in Paris, France (1983). Does anyone have any ideas? Note: I have a French Passport, so working papers are no problem. I would be eager to send my resume anywhere, anytime. Thanks, -- Alain Rostain

Various authorities on the subject (fashion consultants, I believe they call themselves) have indicated that the conservative, dark blue suit is the most effective garment for interviews. Sorry I can't cite any sources, but I recall the title of one book is called "Dress for Success." Anyhow, in this crazy business of ours, the guy who shows up with jeans, a Springsteen T-Shirt, and fleas in his beard will probably get the job!
