[] I am planning on "bridging" a remote located Mac to the Office LAN. I have developed a variety of possibilities... and would like some help. I should note the following 'facts': Connection will be at 9600 over async modems (actually Data Over Voice 'modems'; 'DOVs') at each end connected through an X.25 Packet switch. (Connection could be raised to 19.2 in the future.) Office LAN consists of one LocalTalk zone bridged to one ethernet LAN through a FastPath 4. There is a Shiva NetSerial on the LocalTalk and an Annex II terminal server on the e-net. The Annex can run SLIP. One spare Shiva net serial is available for use at the remote location if necessary. The Shiva AppleTalk 'modem' driver is installed on the remote. My major interest is connecting with our UNIX minicomputer, so getting AppleTalk to work isn't essential if a "really good" tcp/ip solution is available. By the way, we are running CAP on the UNIX box. Diagram of proposed network possibilities: Remote 9.6 remote/office link Office ^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^ AppleTalk or SLIP v +-----+ v | mac | v +---------+ packet switched x.25 net +---------+ +-----+-_-_| 9.6 DOV |-_-_([][][][][][][][][][][][])-_-_| 9.6 DOV |==rs232 |_____| x +---------+ +---------+ ^---<Note: Could place NetSerial here ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Office (cont'd) { +-----------+ +----------+ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ { | NetSerial |-_-_| FastPath |-_-_-(LocalTalk LAN) { +---------+-+ +----------+ { AppleTalk+ { + (rs232 from DOV)-_-_{-_-_-_+ or { + { SLIP+ { +-----+----+ { +-----------+ { | rs232|-_-_ { -_| NetSerial |-_-_-(LocalTalk LAN) { | | { + ----------+ { | Annex II | { or { | | { { | ethernet|xxxx { xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx { +----------+ { X X { +----------X---------+ +----X-----+ { | UNIX mini computer | | FastPath | { +--------------------+ +----------+ So, does anyone know of an "EtherTalk" SLIP driver, or even plain SLIP for the MAC? Could I connect to the Annex using slip and then go back out of the annex serially to the NetSerial? And what experience have you had using 1 (or 2) Net Serials to create a bridge? Or, what other bright ideas do you have... ? Preferred; replies by e-mail. I will summarize and post/forward results as interest warrants.
