[comp.protocols.appletalk] Network Application Monitor???

t-jacobs@wasatch.utah.edu (Tony Jacobs) (07/27/89)

This probally doesn't exist so I'll ask as a request to Apple to include in
their next version of the Responder/Interpoll or to any adventure seeking soul
who would like to take it on as an exercise.

I need a program which would run continously on a Mac (perhaps in the
foreground of a fileserver) and keep track of what applications were running
on every Mac on the Network. It doesn't matter if these are running off the
server or not, I want to know what is running on every Mac and be able to
determine how many copies of the same program are being run at a time as
well as have some kind of histogram over time to see how the load on any one
application is.

I DO NOT want it to tell me who is running what program, I'm not looking for a
Big Brother program to check up on people.

Ideally what I would love to have is the File server keep track of how many
copies of each application and then limit acces to those applications depending
on how many licenses one has. This means it would need to send a message to
anyone running a copy off their hard disk that they are exceeding the number of
licenses owned.

Apple, if your listening, please let me know if you plan on doing anything like
this. Or, if anyone else decides to take this on then let me know because if I
don't hear from anyone I will probally have to do it myself or find someone to
do it.

I'm sure there will be those who are also interested in a utility like this, if
so then drop me a line and I will put you on a "want-list".
