The Microelectronics Center of North Carolina (MCNC) has an immediate opening for a SYSTEMS PROGRAMMER to design, document, code, test, and maintain system software, with particular emphasis on high-quality data communications. Applicants must have experience in both computer communications and software engineering, and must know the C language and UNIX system internals (preferably 4 BSD). Formal training with a master's degree in computer science is highly desirable. MCNC is a non-profit corporation (located in Research Triangle Park) whose primary goal is to develop major educational and research programs in microelectronics. The following are participating institutions of MCNC. Duke University (Durham) North Carolina A.&T. State University (Greensboro) North Carolina State University (Raleigh) University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill University of North Carolina at Charlotte Research Triangle Institute (Research Triangle Park) MCNC operates two 5-MB VAX-11/780 computers with 1.5 GB of disk storage, and a 2-MB VAX-11/750. Plans are to acquire more processing power after our summer 1983 move to a specially designed building. An Ethernet is used for local communication. MCNC communicates with an 11/750 at each participating institution over a 9.6-Kbps leased line with statistical multiplexors, and is testing the first of six 56-Kbps lines. By 1985 each 56-Kbps line will be replaced by a T1 channel (1.5 Mbps) carried over a microwave network. The principal applications are program development, electronic mail, document preparation, and VLSI system design using high-performance color graphics stations. To inquire or to apply, please reply to James Ellis, Manager of Computer Systems, by electronic mail (mcnc!jte or jte.unc@udel-relay), by telephone (919-541-7460), or by U.S. mail (P.O. Box 12889, RTP, NC 27709). Ellis will attend the UNICOM Conference in San Diego. MCNC is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Peter Calingaert Vice-President
