Manager of Computer Services
The Science Center, Harvard University, is seeking a person to manage the
operations of a computer complex, the primary purpose of which is support of
teaching and research. Present equipment includes two VAX 11/780 computers run-
ning VMS, a VAX 11/780, two PDP 11/70 computers and a PDP 11/44, all running
UNIX.
The responsibilities of the manager will include ensuring satisfactory day
to day operations of the complex; supervision of a staff of four programmers
plus a considerable number of student programmers and assistants; planning,
scheduling and supervising software and system improvements; involvement with
budgeting and cost control; and interaction with faculty, students and other
users to assess usage and deal with problems.
Minimum qualifications for the position are a college degree with emphasis
on computer science; a minimum of five years progressive experience with Digital
computers, at least one year of which must be in a supervisory capacity; a
thorough knowledge of VAX/VMS at the system manager level and/or a detailed
knowledge of the internals of UNIX. The position requires drive and initiative,
the ability to work under pressure when necessary, an organised and methodical
approach to administrative matters, and excellent interpersonal skills for
interaction with faculty and students.
