We are trying to use NCSA Telnet 2.3 (MacTCP) via a Fastpath 4 running K-Star 7.0, to access our Unix hosts. The problem is, we can't seem to use the host names. The "hosts" file is set up according to the example from Apple, the name server config in MacTCP looks like this: ira.uka.de 129.13.10.90 o . 129.13.10.90 (The first entry is the default) Neither opening a connection to iraun1 (which is the name server) or iraun1.ira.uka.de (which is the same machine) does anything; the connection hangs with "is being looked up". Opening a connection to 129.13.10.90 works fine. Anyone know what's going on? (The anem server tested fine, when queried from another Unix host, with both names.)

Tim K. will probably correct me if I'm wrong, but last I knew, NCSA Telnet did not use Apple's DNS resolver. This means that you have to specify hosts and nameservers in a "config.tel" file just as in previous versions, rather than in the MacTCP "hosts" file. -- Amanda Walker InterCon Systems Corporation amanda@intercon.uu.net | ...!uunet!intercon!amanda

To get the nameserver function to work with NCSA Telnet, be sure you have the domain name specified correctly in the Config.Tel file. You must also specify the "nameserver=1" parameter in Config.Tel for the host which provides the nameserver function. --Barry Kort
