At Bellcore, e-mail is mainly provided by large computer center machines (roughly 150 users/machine) and smaller lab machines (roughly 30 users/machines) via uucp. This means PC and Mac users need to periodically log into their computer center/lab machine to send and receive mail. However, these users *knew* there had to be a better way. After looking at the available mail programs, I wasn't so sure. At least not until I used POPmail and its POP2 server daemon from boombox.micro.umn.edu. In my opinion, POPmail is excellent!! Since it uses a Hypercard stack, it is easy to modify/customize the Mac interface. It is fast, reliable, inexpensive (requires MacTCP: $100/copy or $2500/site license), secure, well-documented, terrific. It also includes a program called Nag, that alerts the user when new mail has arrived (runs in the background under multifinder). If your computing environment includes unix, check out POPmail - you will be very pleasantly surprised. # Neil Ostroff # # Bellcore, NVC-5J443 (201) 758-5741 # # 100 Schultz Drive nao@cuatro.bellcore.com # # Red Bank, NJ 07701 ...!bcr!nvuxh!nao #
