We have an application that works fine with Apple MacTCP. And we have a Macintosh II that works fine without a video board or monitor, using Timbuktu for remote control. Our problem occurs when we put the MacTCP based application on the Mac II without the video board. We have narrowed it down to Apple MacTCP. When we have Timbuktu and Apple MacTCP on a machine with no video board, the Mac refuses to boot. (The Mac goes "bing", the hard disk flashes briefly, and then it all hangs. No -- we can't tell you if there is a unhappy face on the screen -- remember there is no screen :-} ) Does anyone else have a similiar experience? Is there some reason that Apple MacTCP is dependent on the video card being present? (We have tried renaming the Timbuktu Init so its gets loaded first, and we have tried it loading last, but it made no difference.) (Its not relevant to the problem, but the reason we are doing this is that we have developed an SMTP server and we wish to run it on a screenless Mac II situated in a closet. The Mac II also runs a CE Software QuickMail mailcenter, and a bridge we developed to the SMTP server. The whole system is currently in internal alpha test.)
