[comp.protocols.appletalk] atalkatab questions

barnett@crdgw1.crd.ge.com (Bruce Barnett) (09/14/89)

I am still having problems understanding the format of the atalkatab file.

Each appletalk network is a separate subnet, apple net and zone.

Netmask	255.255.252.0 used everywhere.

		Ethernet
	IP Subnet	AppleNet	Zone
	3.1.4.0
	KIP net: 0.1 KW-KIP
	Ethertalk Net	0.128 KW-ETHER

		Apple networks
IP Subnet	Gateway on Ethernet	AppleNet	Zone
	3.1.56.0	3.1.5.84 0.78 TEST-ZONE
	3.1.28.0	3.1.4.163 0.71 CSLBridge

Plus we have a dozen other similar TOPS-based networks that
I am not worrying about yet.

I am setting up the first KIP server in a TOPS environment
and I currently have this in my atalkatab file:

0.1	N1	3.1.4.0 KW-KIP
0.128	E	3.1.5.84	KW-ETHER
0.78	KC	3.1.5.84	TEST-ZONE
	I3.1.4.0	#ipbroad
	I3.1.4.31	#ipname - name server on ethernet
	I3.1.4.53	#ipdebug
I3.1.4.53	#ipfile - machine running atalkad and rebroadcast
	L0 L0 L0 L0	#ipother
	%n #atnetet
	S200 #ddprangestart - using new UDP flags
	LX0 #flags
	S10 #ipstatic
	S10 #ipdynamic
	%n #atneta
	%n #atnete
---------------
This doesn't look right to me, and I can't get atlook to find anything.
atistest also fails. I am running atalkrd, atalkad and atis, in that order.
atistest can't find atis. atlook '+;+@=' doesn't find anything.

My questions are:

	1) Shouldn't I have the IP Subnet in the file?
telnet works fine across the FP4. But I don't understand
what I should do with the other networks?
Do I just add the routes on the machine running atalkad?

	2) How do I add the other appletalk networks to this file?
Do I just need the 'E' and 'K' lines?

	3) I can use LanRanger to find other zones and apple nets,
But how do I find the node number on each net?

	4) The other bridges are Cayman and FP3's Do I have to add
then into the bridge file using Lan Ranger?

	5) If I have data in the FP4 config file, and data in atalkatab
file, and they are different, which data is used, and when?

	6) Besides atlook, atpinger, atistest, and lanranger, is there
some other tools available to help debug this stuff?

Thanks again for the help, gang.
