[comp.protocols.appletalk] HELP!! trying to run CAP on IBM RT under ACIS 4.3

wales@valeria.cs.ucla.edu (Rich Wales) (09/16/89)

I need assistance from someone who has successfully brought up the CAP
package on an IBM RT/PC running the ACIS 4.3 operating system.

I've been trying for the past few days to get CAP (version of 5/88) to
run on our RT's, without any success whatsoever.

==> When I set up the RT to print (via AppleTalk) to an Apple Laser-
Writer Plus, the spooling software says it has printed each item in
the queue, and the queue gets emptied *very* quickly, but nothing is
printed. (The lights on the printer don't even blink; as far as I
can tell, the RT never says anything to the printer at all.) No
error messages of any kind show up in the RT's log files at all.

==> When I run the test program "samples/atlook", it says that the
"NBPLookup" routine is returning an error code of -1024 (which seems
to indicate a buffer overflow), and then core-dumps. The test pro-
gram "samples/getzones", however, works just fine.

CAP works just fine for us on our Sun 3/280's (SunOS 3.5 or 4.0).
Indeed, most of our 13 printers are already controlled by Suns via
AppleTalk. (For various technical reasons, however, we wish to handle
some of our printers via RT's, rather than Suns, if at all possible.)

I've read and re-read all the configuration documentation I could find,
and I've double-checked my "/etc/atalk.local" and "/etc/printcap" files,
but the stuff flatly refuses to run on our RT's, and I have no idea why.

If anyone out there has CAP successfully working on an RT with ACIS 4.3,
I would be grateful if you would get in touch with me.
