[comp.protocols.appletalk] Executing processes on an AUFS server from a Mac

paul@lfcs.ed.ac.uk (Paul Anderson) (09/25/89)

Some time ago, I posted some patches to the AUFS server that would allow
a Macintosh to execute remote processes on the server. This code has recently
had a major re-write and is much more robust. If there is enough interest, I
will post the new version.

Basically, if the Mac attempts to open a file beginning with '!', then the
server executes the file as a Unix command with its stdio connected to the
Macintosh file handle. The Mac can start up any Unix process and communicate
with it, without needing any special code on the Mac or the Unix end.
We use it from Hypercard to talk to an Interpreter on a Sun.
