[comp.protocols.appletalk] Ethertalk 2.0

magorian@UMD5.UMD.EDU (Dan Magorian) (10/13/89)

I hope to be changing our labs over to Ethertalk 2 next week. Performance
has been somewhat better than 1.2, but I haven't benched it yet. The problem
has been getting Phase II releases of the Fastpath 4 software from Kinetics,
and the production release of Apple router (as well as Phase II drivers for
Etherport and EtherSE boards). But our labs are pretty homogeneous: MacIIs
for clients and AppleShare server using Apple/3Com Ethernet boards. I don't
expect to convert faculty/staff nets (with KSpool and lots of other Phase I
stuff) for awhile. Having tried it, I don't see any benefit from running a
mixed net: wait till you have Phase II drivers for all boards & routers, then
cut over. They coexist on the same wire, but so do IP and DECnet...
