One thing college students should be aware of is that Bell Labs (and presumably American Bell) hires a moderate number of students for the summer. Note that the image of Bell Labs that people traditionally have, while not necessarily incorrect, is perhaps incomplete. There are many openings for CS people, as well as M.E. (physical design) and psychology (human factors) in addition to those people that you may normally expect: eg. physicists and E.E.'s. I've worked with several summer hires and have been impressed with the results, and I believe they were pleased also (at least one has come back for a second summer). Check with your campus recruiting office - I would believe they would have details. Another possibility for physics people - many years ago, I applied to work at Brookhaven for the summer. With recent budget cuts, I don't know if they do that sort of thing, but if you are interested in that area ....
