21602MR@MSU.BITNET (Mark Rosenberg) (11/28/89)

Is anyone running Hypercard from a server over a network ? Is hypercard multi-
launchable ? Any info would be very helpful....

Thanks,

Yes, HyperCard can be run multi-launch off a network. Using
AppleShare, first install HyperCard and ensure that the users don't have
the Make Changes privs. Then, run ResEdit, select the HyperCard application,
and make sure the "Shared" bit is checked. (In earlier versions of ResEdit,
check the "Cached" bit and not the "Shared" bit.)

HyperCard will then run multi-launch. It will be a little slower,
of course, as it will be running from a file server and not a local hard
drive, but the actual speed differential will depend on you network. Also,
users won't be able to make any changes to the stacks (unless you put them
in different folders than the application.)

Regarding sharing Hypercard over a Macintosh network:

Is it also necessary to alter the individual stacks for a multi-user
hypercard application? Are there problems with more than one network user
using the same copy of a "Home" card/stack? If so, can anything be done to
the "Home" card so that there won't be any bombs?

Just ensure that the stacks you want to share are in read-only
folders. With AppleShare, this simply means ensuring that the users who
will access the Home stack or whatever other stacks do not have the Make
Changes priv turned on.

Of course this interferes with some of the normal functioning of
HyperCard, such as the fact that users cannot modify the Address stack or
add their own Quotes to the Quote stack or anything like that. We
recommend that users who wish to have their own Address or Datebook or
Calender (etc.) stacks store them on their own local volumes or in other
folders on the server if that is appropriate.
