[comp.protocols.appletalk] NCSA Telnet on Mac Portable - answer

I asked:

>Network. AppleShare and printing work fine, but whenever I try to

>(unimplemented core routine error). The same software runs fine on my

>Is there a known bug with NCSA Telnet running on a Portable?

Thanks to bell@eniac.seas.upenn.edu (Mike Bell) and Kurt Hirchert
<hirchert@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu>, I now have the answer:

It is a known problem with version 2.2.

NCSA Telnet 2.2 was making an initialization call to a color QuickDraw routine.
On the Mac II, this is appropriate. For some unknown reason, on the Plus and
SE, it was ignored even though CQD is not available. On the Portable, it
causes instant death. The problem has been fixed in version 2.3. Version
2.3 is available via anonymous ftp from ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu (also known as
zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu). Kurt Hirchert.

Alternatively, one could use TCP/Connect from Intercon Systems
703-450-7117, a proprietary telnet program. Mike Bell.
