[comp.protocols.appletalk] laserwriter error

smiller@umn-cs.cs.umn.edu (Steven M. Miller) (01/24/90)

Two of our 3 Apple laserwriters give the following error when trying to
print a Macintosh print job via lwsrv on a Unix host.

%%[ Error: invalidaccess; OffendingCommand: setdefaulttimeouts ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%

If anyone has seen this before and knows how to fix this problem please
respond directly to me. If desired I can post a summary of the
responses.

Thanks,

Steven

Steve,

The problem you are having stems from the fact that the prepfile used for
Mac-generated postscript assumes that you will be accessing the laser
printer via a local area network (AppleTalk). The LAN is somewhat different
in structure than the UNIX host spooler/buffer. You can eliminate the
problem either by deleting or commenting out (%) the line in the prepfile
which contains the following:

		setdefaulttimeouts.

There should be only one occurance of this in the prep file. Its location
in the file will depend on which version of laser driver you are currently
using on your Mac.

If you think about it (but Apple clearly haven't) there can be
no possible value in using setsccinteractive in a LaserPrep
file intended for transmission through the LocalTalk port.
It is an example of the ultra-egotistical attitude which says
"I control this printer, therefore I will initialise all of its
settings as I want, regardless of whether I care or not". Other
people only do this in a mild fashion which screws up attempts
to embed their PostScript output into other PostScript
documents. Apple do it in style, by changing the EEPROM setting
for unrelated aspects of the hardware as well!
